The facility now operates from Exeter instead of Beaconsfield and boasts significant new features to ensure the pound's security.

"We decided that it was past the time that we were able to repair our existing pound because of its age and condition," Mr Vos said.

"We now have a purpose-built, state-of-the-art examination room (and) the holding area itself is heavily insulated so if the dogs are kept inside for a long period it's OK for them.

"We have a pen specially for dangerous dogs and have the ability to control them from outside that room.

"There's also exercise areas and landscaping.

"There's proper car parking, accessible car parking, proper security, proper lighting.

"We're really, really happy with it and looking forward to being able to fully utilise it."

Mr Vos said there were few circumstances where a dog was impounded by the council.

The previous pound held just three dogs while the new pound has the capabilities to individually pen 10 animals.

"We impound a dog if it was at large and we were unable to ascertain its owner in a short period of time or if the dog is unregistered it obviously goes to the pound," Mr Vos said.

"Or [we impound the dog] if the dog has in some ways attacked or threatened."

Mr Vos said it was unlikely each pen would be used simultaneously but said it was important to note the growth of the region.

"We're very much future-proofing - obviously the municipality will continue to grow as will pet ownership."
