The severe weather warning was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology on Wednesday afternoon for the North-West Coast and the central North.
South to south-east winds of 45km/h, with peak gusts of 90km/h, are expected to hit the North between 8am and noon on Thursday, having a particular impact on the Tamar Valley.
The North-West Coast west of Wynyard is predicted to be hit by 50km/h winds and peak gusts of 100km/h between 6am and 11am.
The winds come as part of a trough that began crossing the state on Wednesday night.
The bureau has also issued a sheep graziers warning for King Island, the North-West coast, the Midlands, the central North, the upper Derwent Valley, the South East, Furneaux Islands, the East Coast and the North-East.
The alert warns that cold temperatures, showers and strong southerly winds are expected during Thursday.
The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people in the affected areas should:
● Supervise children closely.
● Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
● Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
● Manage pets and livestock.
● Be prepared in case of power blackouts.
● Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
