The two Northern regional schools will join the six high schools that began offering year 11 and 12 this year, to form part of the state government’s $53 million plan to extend 21 schools by 2018.
Education Minister Jeremy Rockliff said the Campbell Town and Cressy district high schools would offer a range of year 11 and 12 subjects to their students, in partnership with the colleges.
The schools will receive an additional 0.25 per cent staffing allocation for vocational subjects, and up to five extra teachers depending on enrolments.
‘‘Having met directly with many of the students completing year 11 and 12 at the first round of extension schools, I’ve heard first-hand how they are benefiting from being able to complete their senior secondary schooling at their local high school, and how difficult it would have been for them to access the nearest college,’’ Mr Rockliff said.
‘‘Many of these students may not have continued their education if this opportunity wasn’t available, reinforcing the very great importance of providing years 11 and 12 at our rural and regional high schools.’’
He said enrolments at the schools, including Scottsdale, St Helens and St Marys, Smithton, Huonville and Dover high schools, had exceeded expectations.
In February he said up to 180 students had enrolled at these schools.
‘‘Extending our rural and regional high schools sends a strong message to all young Tasmanians that their education does not finish in year 10,’’ he said.
