Digger, the five-month-old common wombat, was born last year.
However, the zoo has struggled to find a suitable name.
Manager Rochelle Penney called on the public’s assistance in naming the marsupial earlier this month and she received an overwhelming response.
Following the zoo’s 12th birthday last weekend, the name Digger was chosen to pay homage to the Australian Diggers ahead of the 100th anniversary of Australia joining the World War I campaign.
‘‘We thought it was a highly appropriate name, due to the commemoration this year,’’ Mrs Penney said.
The zoo received more than 50 name suggestions through its email address and the name Digger saw off competition from Wobbles and Campbell.
