Mr Abbott this afternoon visited the Exeter RSL to help unveil three World War One memorial plaques, before delivering a keynote address.
Mr Abbott spoke of the echoes of history in ongoing Middle East conflicts, while paying tribute to men of the Tamar Valley who have served their country at war.
The Prime Minister then donned the Lycra and was off with the wind on two wheels.
He and the troupe of Pollie Pedal cyclists will now wind their way up the Tamar in near-perfect cycling conditions.
