The Parole Board of Tasmania revealed in a decision dated January 16, but only published this week, that it had paroled Nathan Patrick Mayne from January 26 this year to September 25, 2016.
Mayne’s previous parole application was rejected on June 2, 2014.
Supporters of Nathan John Woolley, who did not know the men who killed him, said yesterday that they were disappointed with the Parole Board’s decision.
The decision stated that Mayne’s crimes had a devastating effect on his victims and, in particular, the family of the deceased victim.
‘‘The applicant has a long and appalling record of prior offending and the board notes his prior convictions include crimes of violence,’’ the decision said.
A psychological assessment of Mayne also stated that his risk profile had ‘‘a high number of historical risk factors’’ in regards to the likelihood of future violent offending.
In the Supreme Court in Launceston on December 16, 2009, Mayne was one of two men jailed after critical injuries were inflicted upon Mr Woolley in an unprovoked attack.
On December 21, 2008, in Warring Street, Ravenswood, Mayne, then 24, held Mr Woolley while his co-offender, Andrew John Semmens, struck a block of wood against Mr Woolley’s head with significant force.
Mr Woolley, 31, died in hospital on Christmas Day 2008.
Mayne was found guilty of and jailed for manslaughter for seven years from March 26, 2009, with a non-parole period of four years and six months.
He also received an extra six months’ jail for a Criminal Code assault upon another victim that night.
Semmens was found guilty of Mr Woolley’s murder and jailed for 20 years from December 23, 2008, with a non-parole period of 12 years and six months.
In May 2011, both killers lost appeals to have their sentences reduced.
