Western Australian artist Nigel Hewitt's piece Woven was unanimously selected from 42 finalists by a panel of three judges on Thursday.
Upon hearing the news today, Hewitt said he felt "overwhelmed".
"I'm only just starting to come to terms with it," he said.
"I'm absolutely rapt that it was me that was chosen."
Judges Francis Parker and Ellie Ray said the nine-panel mixed media ticked all the boxes.
The piece deals with the concepts of environmental issues, the digital age and rebirth.
A painstaking process using finely-ground ash had the project completed over several months.
Dr Ray said it was intriguing to note how Woven changed depending on the viewer's distance from the piece.
James Walker's Making Landfall: An Eastern Connection and Megan Walsh's Convulsive Beauty, Skullbone Plains were announced highly-commended.
