MATTHEW Johns’ love of the Foo Fighters was apparent on his 30th birthday last year.
The cake that had been made to celebrate the milestone was adorned with the faces of the Foo Fighters members, including his personal favourite frontman Dave Grohl.
Mr Johns and his wife Simone, of Mowbray, were two of about 7000 people in the audience last night at Hobart’s Derwent Entertainment Centre when the Seattle rockers returned to Tasmania as part of their Australian and New Zealand tour for the Sonic Highways album.
Mr Johns’ choice of attire yesterday was also reflective of his feelings towards the group, displaying the Don’t Want To Be Your Monkey Wrench, lyrics of one of the group’s earlier songs.
It will be the second time Mr Johns has seen the group live.
‘‘I just love the music and how Dave is such a talented musician,’’ he said pre-concert yesterday.
‘‘My favourite album is There is Nothing Left to Lose because it was the first album I bought and I love every song on there.
‘‘Also there is a mixture of soft rock like Next Year to louder rock songs like Breakout.
‘‘My expectations are very high and I expect to have a very good night singing until I don’t have a voice.’’
The show, which also featured Chicago hardcore act Rise Against, set a new record for the Derwent Entertainment Centre when it sold out in just 20 minutes in November, the quickest on record for the venue.
Foo Fighters, who have released eight studio albums, played a collection of old and new tracks in a set which lasted three hours.
