Our 'Hood, Our People is one of the first free Tasmanian International Arts Festival events being held in the North.
The workshop series will see Portuguese choreographic artist Madalena Victorino and dancer Marta de Silva in the state to work with four professional Tasdance performers and the Northern Suburbs community.
Community members will be asked to take part in six, two-hour workshops over three weeks, at either Rocherlea or Mowbray, before the work is put on show on Friday, March 27.
Tasdance artistic director Annie Greig said Victorino and de Silva had never been to Australia before and this was a great opportunity for Tasmanians to have fun, share their traditions and culture.
"Madalena works significantly with community," Greig said.
"When I saw her working in Portugal, I described it as painting with people.
"[Northern suburbs] is a vibrant community and it seemed to make sense to connect with this community for the project."
Northern Suburbs Community Centre program co-ordinator Mary Challis said the opportunity was a great chance for people to be involved with Tasdance and experience something special.
"People need to realise that it's for everyone," Mrs Challis said.
"You don't need to be a dancer, you don't have to aspire to be a dancer, you've just got to want to be part of it and have a story to tell."
Those wanting to be involved are asked to attend an information centre at the Mowbray Uniting Church Hall on March 10, at 11am.
People from multicultural backgrounds are encouraged to bring instruments or traditional dress along to share aspects of their culture.
For more information or to register call 6326 5506 or turn up on March 10.
