The Launceston Surf Life Saving Club received funding from the Federal Government’s Beach Safety Equipment Fund last month.
The fund will provide $25,000 over four years to each of the 311 Surf Lifesaving Australia clubs to help them buy essential rescue equipment, first aid and medical supplies.
Club president Geoff Lyons said the organisation used $5000 from the fund and $3000 it had raised to purchase a defibrillator.
The lifesaving device will be deployed at major events including the Beauty Point triathlon.
``This money couldn’t have come at a better time,’’ Mr Lyons said.
``Things were getting a bit dire with the defribrulater - we’ve now been able to update that as well as buy new training mannequins and an outboard motor for one of our three inflatable rescue boats.’’
Lyons MHR Eric Hutchinson said he was pleased to see the funds being put to good use.
``Coastal waters can be hazardous and each year our dedicated life savers perform about 12,000 rescues and 32,000 first aid treatments nationally,” he said.
