The Vinnies store was opened at 10.30am by senior representatives from the St Vincent de Paul Society.
Society state president Toni Muir, chief executive Merleen Cronin, Northern region president Joan Joyce and Northern regional manager Peter Freak attended the launch.
Mr Freak said it was the first store he had opened during his time with the organisation and hoped future launches would be met with equal celebration.
He said the Malborough Street store had taken almost four months to set up and had already perked the curiosity of would-be bargain hunters.
"I've knocked on the doors of all the businesses on this end of the street, they're all very excited to see us coming," Mr Freak said.
"We've had interest, lots of volunteers, a really good response — there are a lot of residents starting work here already."
He said although they were unrelated, the opening coincided with the closure of the Deloraine outlet. "Deloraine has been one of our stores for a long time, unfortunately this month it had to shut, as the landlord wouldn't renew the lease," Mr Freak said.
"We're still looking to get back into Deloraine and would love to be back there, it wasn't our desire to leave." Op shop items from the store will be sourced from across the North and, if required, statewide to keep it in full stock.
The store, at 1/30 Malborough Street, will be open from 9.30am to 5pm on weekdays and from 10am to 3pm on Saturdays.
