WHEN is a tender not a tender?
When it’s a competitive evaluation process.
When is a co-payment not a co-payment?
When it’s a value signal.
What’s that sound?
It’s the ghost of George Orwell saying ``I told you so”.
— W. J. GREER, Beauty Point.
Tourism projects
WHAT on earth does the Hodgman Government want?
A Tasmania that is "open for business", especially for tourism projects?
Or compulsory acquisition of existing tourism projects in order to go back to exporting woodchips?
Would somebody please explain.
— JOHN BIGGS, Sandy Bay.
David Hicks
MANY people have sacrificed their lives to ensure that every person receives due process and natural justice and procedural fairness under our legal system.
Even now when we learn that David Hicks never committed a crime we still have some people condemning him.
A phrase that is often repeated and often ignored is - innocent until proven guilty.
Sadly and, to their shame, many people denied David Hicks the protection demanded by these words.
— LES NIBBS, Mowbray.
Contaminated food
WITH the recent event of people getting infected with contaminated food from overseas, many people are getting wary of buying imported food, but the question must be asked, why is it so difficult to identify where an article comes from?
Despite all the efforts to improve branding laws it seems you still need a magnifying glass to read the country of origin.
Why not have a bold, easily identifiable symbol for Australian content in different colours for different contents.
For instance, blue would represent Australian owned, with only Australian ingredients, yellow would be Australian owned with some imported ingredients, and red would be an overseas owned company that uses Australian ingredients.
Anything without the symbol would have to be imported.
It sound simple and so obvious, so why can’t something like this be implemented as soon as possible.
— MALCOLM McCULLOCH, Pipers River.
Teacher training
GOOD on Education Minister Christopher Pyne - No I don’t want him as Prime Minister.
He is however, trying to improve the standard of teacher training.
Some reports suggest it needs to be and urgently.
As a teacher for nearly 30 years, I would like to comment.
There is probably too much emphasis on theory, sociology, philosophy and psychology in training and not enough emphasis on practice teaching with criticism lessons.
Control in the classroom is absolutely vital. I don’t know if it can be taught.
I feel you either have it or haven’t.
Not every student wants to learn.
Knowledge of technology and computing is essential today and more so into the future.
I would suggest maybe students do a Bachelor of Computing of Technology or part thereof.
From my Diploma of Education studies (which would be equivalent to a Master of Teaching today, we have to write a mini thesis) all I remember is the qualities of a good teach are ``fair, friendly, firm” and the qualities of a good lesson, ``variety, interest and activity”.
We had however three lots of four weeks of supervised practice teaching in a variety of schools.
It was there I learnt my ``trade”.
It stood me in very good stead in my career.
— MALCOLM SCOTT, Newstead.
