There has been a lot of goodwill surrounding the Sydney Kings in the five seasons since they rose from the dead. They have been stable and solid but not spectacular or most importantly, successful.

The Kings need a shake-up.

Their season ends this weekend with a double header against United at the Kingdome on Friday night and a return meeting in Melbourne on Sunday.

Coach Damian Cotter admitted it had been a tough season at a club function on Thursday, he praised his troops for the fight they had shown despite the adversity of serious injuries to star import Josh Childress, centre Angus Brandt and now captain Ben Madgen.

But he summed it up by saying it was the club's fifth losing season in a row since readmission to the NBL. That's not good enough for the only NBL franchise in Australia's largest sporting market.

Cotter was tight-lipped about what the Kings would do to make over their roster but it's clear there will be a few new faces next season.

Much depends on Childress. The chances of him staying appear to be 50-50. He's loving living in Sydney, he's genuinely enjoyed his time with the team and he even said he had scoped out the process required to get his beloved dog, a chow chow called Beast who has his own Instagram account (beastchill), into the country.

But there is talk around the traps that he has already received more lucrative offers. If his decision comes down to lifestyle, he'll remain in Sydney. If the bottom line is the bottom line, he won't be back in Australia next season.

Point guard Kendrick Perry has not lived up to expectations and one heartless spectator courtside at last weekend's loss to Wollongong asked whether he'd be given a video tribute on Friday night in what will surely be his last appearance in purple and gold at the Kingdome.

Brandt has been a handy acquisition and the young centre, in his first year out of the US college ranks, should win NBL rookie of the year and be a much more dominant inside presence next season.

With Madgen and co-captain Tom Garlepp, back-up point guard Jason Cadee and young big man Josh Duinker also on the books, the Kings have reliability but they need more spark.

Even if Childress comes back, they need another import with strike power, ideally a point guard who can score as well as set up his teammates.

As history shows, selecting an import is a hit-and-miss exercise but the Kings need – and have always needed - a marquee attraction who can produce spectators as well as he can produce points.

As the great philosopher Kierkegaard, or perhaps his Danish countrymen A-ha, said: "It's no better to be safe than sorry."

The team's forced move from the Sydney Entertainment Centre to Homebush early next season is the other variable in their future equation.

It's a little outdated but the purple-seated Kingdome still has a certain charm. The move to the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre will bring new fans from Sydney's west to Kings games but they won't be able to house as many spectators with a capacity of 4000 – they have averaged around 6000 at the Kingdome this season.

It's ludicrous that a city the size of Sydney only has a couple of venues which are suitable for an NBL club.

As has been the case the last few years, the Kings have a dedicated ownership group, a proactive front office and a coach who is hell-bent on achieving success – with a shake-up of the roster in the off-season, they can be on track to at the very least rack up more wins than losses next season and give themselves a chance of reaching their championship goal.
