Mr Bailey said that it was all about preparation.
"The first day of April is a common day to introduce rams with ewes," he said.
"The result is lambing starts about the beginning of September, but the best results don't come by chance — plenty of preparation is needed to get good lambing rates and survival.
"One critical date for that target is the middle of February, about 49 days from the start of mating as sperm made on that date will be ready on April 1.
"However, if the ram is sick, a bit 'off', carrying an injury or recovering from a set-back it could affect his fertility and therefore the number of offspring.
"It is important that everything is done to ensure the ram is well prepared, healthy and fit to undertake the task ahead."
