At 8:30pm last night, the Tasmania Police Search and Rescue team received a call for help from from six people in the Snug Tiers area, south of Hobart.
The group consisted of five adults from Glenorchy and a one-year-old child who had been four wheel driving and become bogged.
Police said the group decided to walk to help but as darkness fell they became lost in the rainforest, sparking grave concerns for the infants well being.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a ground search team were sent to the area and located the group about one kilometre north-west of Snug Falls.
The group were unable to be rescued, however, due to low cloud and poor weather.
The ground crew accessed the group at about 1am this morning, but the group was cold, wet, exhausted, and unable to walk.
Subsequently the helicopter returned to the scene at first light and winched all six people out including the infant.
All were flown to Snug uninjured, but were checked over by Ambulance Tasmania Paramedics.
Tasmania Police would like to advise people in similar circumstances requiring assistance to not leave their vehicles, as this complicated the rescue in this instance.
