A chance to see Burles himself racing on the track will occur this Saturday in the Carrick Cup’s celebrity pony race.
Burles will race against other racing personalities, including harness driver Gareth Rattray, and leading thoroughbred trainers such as Scott Brunton and John Blacker.
Carrick Park Pacing Club secretary Sandra Rybarczyk said the country racing meeting usually drew a crowd of up to 3000 to the track.
‘‘I’d have to say it’s a great day for the town, we aim to provide a day for the family,’’ Ms Rybarczyk said.
‘‘We’ve brought [renowned Tasmanian trots broadcaster] Peter Gilligan over as our guest broadcaster — he should add a bit to the atmosphere.’’
She said the first race would begin at 4.30pm with Fashions on the Field and a tug-of-war competition to be held in between.
An exhibition race with jockeys saddled on pacing horses will also be held on the day.
‘‘We’ve got five horses in that ... it will be very different,’’ Ms Rybarczyk said.
The main draw for the cup, as with many in regional areas, is the experience it provides, she said.
‘‘At Carrick you’re not two feet from the track, you’re right there, the atmosphere comes from the horses,’’ Ms Rybarczyk said.
‘‘There’s a real country feel to it, and a lot of people love it for that reason.’’
