TOP Tasmanian bowlers Wayne Willcox and Trevor Docking have emerged as leading contenders after the opening day of the $13,000 Penguin Classic Pairs yesterday.

Willcox and Docking remained unbeaten after their sectional play at Penguin building up a 27-shot advantage.
The tournament began after an official opening by Montgomery MLC Leonie Hiscutt with sectional play being held at the host club as well as Burnie, South Burnie and Ulverstone.
Regarded as one of the classiest fields in the 33-year history of the tournament most of the favoured bowlers are all well placed after the opening day.
National coach Steve Glasson, bowling with Mitchell Banks, also impressed at Penguin as did Hobart pair Tony Hack and John Howard.
Reigning champion Aaron Wilson from Victoria and partner Rob Dixon are well placed after their sectional play as a former winner Greg Douce from Latrobe and his partner Rocky Horton.
Launceston’s former world champion Rebecca Van Asch and her young Sheffield partner Holllie Keen were beaten by Scottsdale husband and wife Rob and Jean Claridge in their opening game.
Rhys McDougal and Michael Sims, of Trevallyn, were involved in a drawn game with Chris Coachman and Mick Baron, of the Wenty Leagues, in NSW, in sectional play at Ulverstone.
At South Burnie tournament favourites Kelvin Kerkow and Mark Nitz are well placed as are former winners Richard Richardson and Brian Butler.
Peter McDonald and Dane Dennis (South Coogee) will take a 49-shot advantage into today’s games.
After post sectional play today the finals will be held at Penguin tomorrow.
