THERE is absolutely no doubt hostages of the Sydney café siege went through an horrific experience that will affect them for the rest of their lives, yet selling their stories to the media for a price, just doesn’t cut it with me.
Former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett’s comment that its ‘just plain grubby’ probably sums up many peoples thought on the notion.
With a price tag of approximately $300,000 for one particular interview, NSW Upper house MP Fred Nile has got it right when he states that funds for any media appearance should be directed to a charity of their choice.

FORMER Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett says Sydney café siege hostages selling their stories to the media is ‘just plain grubby' (The Examiner, January 21).
Under New South Wales law, compensation for hostages could be capped at $1500.
What an insult, no wonder they’re going for the bigger money and good luck for them if they succeed.
Each and any one of those hostages could have been killed.

Life
LIFE is just so serious today.
Three things on a lighter note.
First: There is a new set of stamps called "Native Animals". The wombat is referred to as the "common wombat". What an insult. I would advise all the wombats at Cradle Mountain to remain in their burrows and not come out for tourists, Much better terms: regular, normal, usual, familiar, standard (I like it) or average. But, "common" - vulgar, uncivilised, inferior and unsophisticated.
Second: I have just had my 75th birthday with a river pageant and fireworks. Very few card companies produce 75th year cards, although, it is significant, three quarters of a century. A resourceful friend sent me a 60 years and a 15 years card.
Third: I have fallen in love with Cradle Mountain. Can anyone tell me why Dove Lake is called Dove Lake? I have held the map in all directions and cannot get the shape of a dove even slightly, not even one on "performance enhancing drugs" - very fashionable. Maybe there is a Sir Phillip Dove somewhere in Tasmania's history?

Fuel
WHY is it that unleaded fuel in Melbourne is 98 cents per litre, yet we are still paying over $1.20?

Driving Speed
AFTER reading about unsafe driving which I agree with, (The Examiner, Jan 21).
Thought it would be a great opportunity to write and ask, why when driving, at the correct distance behind someone who is driving well below the speed limit, decide as soon as you put your indicator on to overtake when you have a safe clear road, speed up, making it difficult to overtake safely?
Is it a macho thing or are they showing you they have a faster car than you?
When you do overtake they go back to the original speed they were doing.
So to those drivers, I say do what a lot of us do, slow down and let the person overtake safely.
Sadly its just not me who certain drivers do this too.
