Sydney creative duo Reg Mombassa and Pete O'Doherty will deliver the whimsical blues-driven psychedelic tunes of Dog Trumpet in Launceston tonight.
Mombassa and O'Doherty were members of iconic Australian group Mental as Anything, both renowned as talented artists in their own right.
Dog Trumpet is an amalgamation of the brothers' passion for 1960s psychedelia, Celtic and American roots music and artists such as Muddy Waters, Elmore Jones and Hound Dog Taylor.
The obscurely named group owes its title to a Mambo drawing of a dog-trumpet cross, despite there being "no dogs or trumpets in the band", according to Mombassa.
He said they last visited Tasmania in 2014 and always enjoyed the experience, due to its similarity to their original New Zealand home.
"I've been there a lot with the Mentals - we've always liked Tasmania," Mombassa said.
"In fact the Mentals shot one of our first film clips in Hobart, You Leave Me, Can I Come Too?
"I had to do a guitar solo up on Mount Wellington. It was incredibly cold, snowing lightly, freezing wind - I remember it quite clearly, slightly uncomfortable place to do a film clip."
He said that although he had worked hard for his career, the success of his works was not something he took for granted.
"It's not easy. I know a lot of very good artists and musicians who don't make a living and have to work day jobs," Mombassa said.
"I worked in unskilled labouring jobs for a few years when I was young, but I've managed to avoid it for some time now."
