A 45-YEAR-OLD Campbell Town man has died after the boat he was skippering capsized at St Helens.
The man had been boating with his two sons aged 12 and 16, and a 15-year-old family friend.
The four occupants of the boat were thrown into the water by a breaking wave as they tried to navigate past the notoriously dangerous Barway.
The three children were pulled from the water by civilian boats nearby.
A search ensued for the man, who was found unconscious up to 20 minutes after the boat overturned.
He was taken to a boat ramp where CPR was administered, but could not be revived.
All passengers onboard the boat were wearing personal floatation devices.
An investigation will be conducted for the Coroner and also Marine and Safety Tasmania.
Police thanked those who helped the occupants of the capsized vessel and reminded boat users to be aware of local weather conditions and boat safety at all times.
EARLIER
A man has died following a boating mishap at the St Helens Barway early this morning.
Police and emergency services were called to the barway about 8.10am this morning.
A small boat had overturned and four people were in the water, police say.
Three people were pulled from the water by police and members of the public.
The fourth person was recovered a short time later however has died at the scene.
The ABC has reported that the victim is a middle-aged man from Campbell Town.
