For Victorians Lisa Placentino and James Moring, their perception of the myth may have changed forever, after James proposed to Lisa in Tasmania earlier this month.

The pair were bushwalking in the Mount William National Park, in the state's North-East, when they spotted a very rare white echidna.

Shortly after, James set up a small romantic picnic area and professed his love for his wife-to-be.

Was it the sly work of Tasmania's rare little Cupid?

Nobody knows, but Lisa says her first trip to the Apple Isle will forever be a cherished memory.

"James proposed to me at a picnic lunch on the Eddystone Point rocks and the echidna contributed to making it the most memorable day of my life," she said.

"We saw the echidna at roughly midday off Ansons Bay Road, foraging near the road and we stopped for a look. I knew it was something unusual having seen many echidnas over my life and roughly five overall in 10 days of holidaying in Tasmania. We were amazed and researched if it was albino or not to discover it's actually a rare and unique colour of the echidna that's not albino."

Following their unforgettable experience, the pair have vowed to return to the state soon.

"It was our first time here and we will definitely be coming back and donating to conservation efforts."
