After 11pm on Tuesday, police allegedly clocked the 17-year-old p-plater at 180 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the East Tamar Highway at Dilston.
The driver was also on his first year of his provisional driver licence, meaning his top speed was restricted to 80 km/h.
He will now face court and have his car clamped for 28 days.
Police took the opportunity to remind drivers that excessive speed was one of the main contributing factors to serious and fatal crashes.
Constable David Eaton expressed concern and disgust over the driver’s flagrant disregard for the speeding laws, which put other road users at high risk.
