Rotary Club secretary Jan Hughes said that the street party this year replaced the traditional Christmas parade.
``We're always looking to provide something new to people to experience and I think it's a good job that the committee can come up with these new ideas and bring them to fruition,'' she said.
``We're always worried about the weather and it was a little bit damp on Friday night, but no one seemed too bothered.''
Entertainment included the Scottsdale Rockers, Tapestry Dance Group, a carols concert with Sing Australia, Men of Dorset and the Scottsdale Choir, and performances by the Caledonian Pipe Band and rock group Wildfire.
The Rotary Club was among those offering food for the hungry crowd, their barbecue stall keeping the hamburgers and sausages coming.
Rotarian Peter Partridge was one of the members serving revellers and said that while a lot of parents sought shelter, their children had a wonderful time.
``It was a successful event, but I'd like to see us revert back to the traditional Christmas parade,'' he said.
``There was some disquiet when the parade moved to the recreation ground last year and again this year with the dropping of the parade altogether.
``I think there needs to be a bit more discussion of what we should present - it's something that needs to be worked on.''
Free children’s entertainment included face painting, hand ball competitions, arts and crafts, jumping castle and mini jeep rides.
Victoria Street was again open to traffic about 10pm.
