The council will conduct flood modelling in the Northern Midlands area to determine peak historical flood levels.
Mayor David Downie said the modelling would help to predict levels of flooding after rainfall events.
"The aim is that if we can have anecdotal evidence of where floods have gone to in the past that might be useful for people to be able to correlate the effects of rainfall events and what those rainfall events lead to," he said.
"Every flood behaves in a different manner, and the more information that the authorities can gain helps the authorities to predict levels of floods that will eventuate from rainfall events."
Cr Downie said the aim of the exercise was to improve the safety of Northern Midlands residents.
"There's nothing better than local knowledge with the effects of floods on local areas," he said.
"Our council and people within the Northern Midlands have been very actively involved in flood mitigation issues.
"There are a lot of flood plains within the Northern Midlands, from the various catchments - Macquarie and the South Esk catchment."
The council is particularly interested in photographs of the March 2011 floods, as well as floods at Longford in 1969 and 1929.
Information can be sent to the council at PO Box 156 Longford, Tas, 7301, or by email at council@nmc.tas.gov.au.
