The 18-year-old midfielder, originally from Burnie but has been living in Queensland for the past three years, was the Dockers' first pick in Thursday night's national draft at selection 13.
The 181-centimetre and 74-kilogram smooth-moving midfielder was drafted after averaging 18 disposals a match for his adopted state during the under-18 national championships.
"I had no idea [that Fremantle was going to be the club that would select him], as clubs kept their cards pretty close to their chests this year it was a big surprise, and I'm very excited at the same time," the brother of Maverick told Western Australian radio station 6PR.
"I'm not sure whether they want to keep me light or use me on the outside a little bit more or develop my inside game, they are all the things I have to look forward to.
"I've loved watching them and the likes of [Nathan] Fyfe, [David] Mundy and [Stephen] Hill, those sort of blokes and I can't wait to get over and meet them.
"Especially with a couple of Tassie boys [Alex Pearce and Brady Grey] there from last year."
Weller was one of three Tasmanians to have their AFL dreams realised on Thursday night, with Glenorchy tall defender Josh Watts and Lauderdale running backman Josh McGuinness going to Brisbane at picks 65 and 81 respectively.
Brisbane recruiting manager Stephen Conole said both players were targeted to help bolster an ageing Lions backline.
"He [Watts] is a tall defender who loves to attack the game and he's strong overhead," Conole said on Brisbane's website.
"Like a lot of young talls, he's going to have a bit of work to do on certain parts of his game, but we think he's got some attributes that not many in our club have."
On McGuinness he said: "He's a strong offensive player and loves to take the game on."
There are now five Tasmanians at the Gabba, with those two joining Mitch Robinson, Josh Green and Ryan Harwood at the club. Thursday night also saw Glenorchy's Zac Webster at Hawthorn and Burnie's Maverick Weller and Eli Templeton at St Kilda officially placed on their club's senior list.
