Transmission company TasNetworks found millions of dollars worth of savings in its revenue proposal, leading to an announcement yesterday that households will see a decrease in their electricity bills. A $10 drop is expected for the 2015-16 period.

TasCOSS chief executive Tony Reidy said he was happy to see a drop in prices but there was more that could be done in the future.

‘‘Any reduction in the cost of electricity, even a small reduction, is very welcome and will provide some assistance to low-income and disadvantaged households,’’ Mr Reidy said.

‘‘We remain very concerned that one of the most successful programs for reducing the price of electricity for low income households in a real sense, retrofitting of energy efficiency issues, still needs to be funded at a serious level.’’

He said Tasmanians continued to spend a high proportion of their income on power and an investment into energy efficiency programs for low-income families should be made.

‘‘Programs like the Energy Champions Program ... that have provided support to families in government housing and private rentals have had a real impact on the cost of their electricity and have often reduced annual bills by around $500,’’ he said.

TasNetworks found that 15 per cent of the average electricity bill came from transmission charges.

TasNetworks formed this year when Aurora Energy and transmission company Transend merged, saving about $8 million.
