Premier Will Hodgman is scheduled to address State Parliament about the December 7 criterium, which is destined to scale unprecedented heights this year following the recruitment of 2013 Tour de France champion Froome.
The House of Assembly’s notices of motions lists that Mr Hodgman will recognise Froome’s visit to race alongside Porte and 100 of Australia’s best National Road Series riders.
He will move that the house ‘‘acknowledges the boost to the profile of both the race and Tasmania that their presence will bring, showcasing the state and providing an opportunity to further diversify our tourism sector’’.
Thanking Porte for his promotion of cycling and his home state to the world and the staff and volunteers of the classic for their efforts in promoting cycling, the notice said cycling is one of the most popular forms of exercise and recreation with just over half of Tasmanian households having access to a bicycle.
Cycling Tasmania executive officer Collin Burns and race director Nigel Baker were pleased that the race and Porte were being recognised in State Parliament.
‘‘Great to see our Premier Will Hodgman will be acknowledging Richie Porte and the Stan Siejka Launceston Cycling Classic Committee for focusing the international spotlight on Launceston,’’ Burns said.
Baker said the state government, including Tourism Tasmania, Events Tasmania and Tourism North, had been instrumental in this year’s event.
‘‘Their support has been outstanding and they also should be congratulated for helping us showcase the event, Launceston and Tasmania to the world,’’ he said.
‘‘Also a very special mention to Richie for his support of the festival and going far beyond the call of duty.’’
