When a young man took his own life in November last year, Tammy McLean decided to turn the tragedy into a positive learning experience.
On November 16, her hard work paid off and more than 1500 people came out to celebrate the Doing Life Together Family Fun Day.
The two-day event promoted the importance of individuals and families seeking help if they were suffering from mental health issues.
Guests enjoyed a semi-formal dinner, music, beach activities at Low Head and the chance to see Australia's strongest man, Derek Boyer, pull a bus.
Ms McLean said people flew in from across the country to attend to the event.
"We had a tragedy in the community and it was a way to make a positive out of something that wasn't a particularly positive experience," she said.
"We lost a young man to suicide and this is a way to heal what's been broken around here."
More than $9000 was raised at the weekend, with all profits being sent to suicide prevention charities Beyond Blue and Angels Goal.
"It was just a big community event," Ms McLean said. "I don't think I've really grasped the success of it yet."
With so many people turning out for this year's inaugural event, organisers are hoping to continue it in the future.
