Bridport life saving manager Paul Hawkins said the surf rescue course was for children over 13, with the bronze medallion course open to those 15 or over.
"The courses will be provided over a single weekend," he said.
"Participants will be trained in key aspects of first aid, spinal management, CPR and defibrillation use, water rescue, use of equipment, radio communications, signals and other important life saving skills.
"Bronze candidates must complete a 400 metre pool swim in under nine minutes, with certificate participants required to complete a 200 metre swim in under five minutes.
"These swims must have been confirmed by an accredited trainer prior to the course or completed on the day."
Those who fail to reach the required proficiency at the weekend have a number of weeks to improve their skills before a December 20 testing date, at Bridport.
Mr Hawkins said that lifesavers from around the state would do the proficiency test at Bridport on Saturday.
"This year we're hoping to entice beach runners and swimmers to join, ahead of the club's junior, senior and masters carnival in February," he said.
Anyone interested should call Mr Hawkins on 0407 532 380 for details.
