The governing body was on Sunday tight-lipped about the latest allegations against a South Sydney-contracted player, this time recruit Cody Walker, who was charged with common assault and stalk or intimidate intending to cause fear or physical or mental harm. He was stood down indefinitely for an incident alleged to have occurred a fortnight ago, the same time the NRL was grappling with a backlash over its handling of the Kirisome Auva'a case.

But what can't be ignored is the latest domestic violence allegation levelled at an NRL player could not emerge in the public domain at a worse time. At the end of the same week the Bulldogs and White Ribbon Australia trumpeted a three-year charity partnership last week, Walker's charge surfaced.

And now White Ribbon Australia will celebrate White Ribbon Day on Tuesday, the national day designed to help stop domestic violence in this country.

Davies has worked closely with Bulldogs chief executive Raelene Castle to form a landmark partnership and told Fairfax Media that the NRL was taking steps to eradicate a level of "inconsistency" in dealing with domestic violence cases in the past.

"I would like to see an absolute zero tolerance to players who commit domestic violence," she said. "I also want to see the code work with these players to change these behaviours. That's why I use that word consistent because I think there's been a level of inconsistency in the past."

Davies said White Ribbon Australia had been pleased with signs from players across the code who have vowed to take a stand against domestic violence. She said those who had been involved in workshops have vowed to eradicate domestic violence from the code — and encouraged the NRL to continue working with the likes of Auva'a.

Many others had undergone education which aims to identify key indicators which lead to potential situations where domestic violence could arise.

Asked whether she could see domestic violence cases completely eradicated from the NRL, Davies said: "All of us have an aspirational goal and that's to have an entire society in which women feel safe, women feel equal and women don't feel threatened. I'd love to be out of a job. I'd love for White Ribbon Australia not to exist. We do look to a time when it is wiped out. [NRL players] are a microcosm of the community and they're very much in the limelight. It's just not physical violence ... it's about how they want their own daughters respected and the women in their lives not to undergo treatment that their second-class citizens."

What course of action is taken against Walker, who is expected to defend all charges, if he is found guilty is yet to be known. But his freshly inked contract, offered by the Rabbitohs to provide cover in their backline, will likely be torn up if found guilty of the charges. Auva'a was banned indefinitely after pleading guilty to recklessly injuring his ex-girlfriend in January. He was instrumental in the Rabbitohs snapping their 43-year premiership drought and has been suspended for at least nine months.
