The Launceston-born NASCAR star has announced he is returning to the V8 Supercar series which he won in 2003 and 2004.
Ambrose will begin his comeback competing for Dick Johnson Racing and the touring car great was among the first to greet him when he flew into Queensland from the US this week.
Ambrose's much-anticipated return to Australian racing will officially be launched at Lakeside Park in Kurwongbah, Queensland, today.
He will join Johnson to unveil the DJR #66 Falcon which has received a wildcard entry into the final round of the V8 Supercars Championship in Sydney on December 5-7.
Ambrose will also take to the track in his first taste of a V8 Supercar before the Sydney NRMA 500 on a street circuit.
The race will feature the first head-to-head between Ambrose and the man who replaced him as the competition's benchmark driver, Jamie Whincup, who wrapped up his sixth championship last week.
"[It will be a] baptism of fire for me, but looking forward to it," Ambrose said.
