The man died when his car failed to turn a left-hand corner on the Lyell Highway, careening off the road and hitting trees.
His female partner has minor injuries.
Police are continuing investigations into the crash.
EARLIER: A 69-year-old man from South Australia has been killed in a single-vehicle crash on the Lyell Highway at Derwent Bridge in the state's south.
Police say the crash happened about 5pm on Thursday when the vehicle the male tourist and his female companion were travelling in failed to negotiate a bend and left the road before colliding with a tree, 25km west of the Derwent Bridge.
Police have confirmed that the female passenger was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a non-serious condition.
