TO SAY it has been a big year for former Launceston resident Ben Simms would be an understatement.

Recording in his bedroom under the name Violet Swells, with a band (Luke Middleton, Matthew Barnes, Stan Barnes and Tomas Webster) backing him in the live setting, Simms's year has seen him release an EP, has seen his music be played on Rage and Triple J and has seen him embark on a national tour.
Simms, who now lives in Hobart for school, has just released Violet Swells' second single from that EP and is about to embark on a second tour.
Described as psychedelic pop, Violet Swells will perform at Falls Festival as the Triple J Unearthed artist in December and will also be at A Festival Called Panama in the North-East in March.
"I had always been recording in my bedroom and putting together a song or two for fun, and about this time last year my housemate talked me into sharing it on the internet, and then we decided to start playing it as a band," Simms said.
"We just started playing and it has been about getting as many people as possible to listen to it.
"This has given me the chance to go and play across Australia, and it is motivating knowing people are going to listen to it, so you have to put some effort in it."
Violet Swells' new single Here Comes Yesterday will be released on Mirador Records at the end of the month.
Their latest tour will begin in Brisbane on November 21, and will take in Hobart's Brisbane Hotel on Thursday, December 20. They will also play at the Tasmanian Beerfest on Saturday.
