DARK pop is not necessarily over the top depressing, says Heather Cheketri, one half of Love Like Hate, the Brisbane duo that specialises in the genre.

"For us it's the lyrical content that makes it this way," Cheketri said.
"It's not that depressing, but we take a lot of this lyrical content from real life, and quite often a lot can happen in life which isn't great, and writing it down is a good way to get it out of your system.
"It's really writing about your deepest dark thoughts about these events, but the music also has a dramatic flare to it.
"It embraces that passionate and loving like you hate, as hate is just such a strong emotion."
Cheketri said events such as broken relationships and death had helped shaped this feeling.
"'We don't walk around mopey and sad all day, but generally when you are happy you don't feel the need to write about it, you just enjoy the happiness, but if you are going through a tough time, you do want to express how that influences you."
Cheketri said this translated to an emotional experience when watching the girls on stage, but also fun and intriguing at the same time.
Cheketri and band-mate Sonja Ter Horst have just released their new EP Unnoticed, in which they have added an electronic element to their sound.
"This EP is for us an example of where we are heading in the future and for us that is really exciting, because our music is heading in the right direction."
They will play in Hobart for the first time next weekend.
