An events group has gained a road closure permit from Launceston City Council as part of its plans to run a 300-metre long water slide from George to Wellington streets.
The Elizabeth Street event is scheduled to launch next week with dates mooted for January or February next year.
The water slide, if approved, would be part of a fund-raising effort for CanTeen and is hoped to be run in Devonport and Hobart.
The slide proposed for Launceston is very similar to this one featured in the video ...
The Examiner understands about 6000 tickets would be sold for the Launceston leg, with a target of about $12,000 from each event.
CityProm chief executive Vanessa Cahoon said businesses within the area had been consulted by the group.
"We're working with organisers help promote it," Ms Cahoon said.
"It's great to see a different event come to the city.
"We often see a lot of events with the same theme, it's great to see something different that will appeal to younger people, get younger families back into the city and teenagers as well."
Launceston general manager Robert Dobrzynski said the event was likely to make a "real splash".
"With a mix of new events, as well as traditional favourites like Festivale and the council's own popular Music in the Park program, summer is shaping up to be an exciting one in Launceston," Mr Dobrzynski said.
