GEORGE TOWN 5pm: More re-checks have started in the deputy mayor tie-breaker between Heather Barwick and Tim Harris. Remember, if there still isn't a clear winner after the re-check, the winner will be decided by the "blue ball" system.

WEST TAMAR 4.50pm: A possible election result for West Tamar Council has been released, with about half of the votes counted. At present, elected members are Christina Holmdahl, Rick Shegog, Peter Kearney, Joy Allen, Geoff Lyons, Tim Woinarski, Lyden Colin Ferguson, Richard Ireland and Carol Bracken. Incumbent John Watson is still in the count, while councillor Peter Kaye is presently excluded.

DORSET 4pm: There is movement in the Dorset camp, with a possible election result being posted based on about 50 per cent of votes counted. At present, elected councillors are Barry Jarvis, Shaun Moore, Dale Jessup, Maxwell Arthur Hall, Greg Howard, Steven Arnold, Sheryl Martin, Lawrence Archer and Mary Schramm. Former Mayor Peter Patridge does not look like getting elected at this stage. 

MEANDER VALLEY 4pm: Tenielle McDermott and Richie Fellows have been excluded from the councillor race in Meander Valley.

FROM DEPUTY EDITOR BARRY PRISMALL: The race for the Launceston deputy mayor position is a thriller, with aldermen Danny Gibson and Rob Soward the last two in the race.

Candidates Alan Harris and Tom Ellison have been excluded.

Alderman Jim Cox has emerged as the king maker in this contest, with more than 6000 of his votes to be distributed as preferences.

Alderman Gibson leads Alderman Soward 8301 votes to 8036. He needs 54 per cent of Alderman Cox's preferences and Alderman Soward needs almost 60 per cent.

In the mayoral race Albert van Zetten blitzed the field with 11,492 votes or 50.2 per cent, in a strong field which included colleague aldermen Ted Sands and Hugh McKenzie, and businessman Darren Alexander.

Alderman van Zetten has been mayor since 2007. His emphatic win is a far cry from the close contest with Rosemary Armitage, now a state MP, when he beat her by a vote after a recount.   

If it was the desire of some to unsettle and unseat him with rumour and talk of damaging reports they failed miserably.

Similarly Alderman Gibson seems to have shrugged off the dirty politics waged against him in the campaign, to emerge as a strong contender for deputy mayor.      

In the votes for aldermen former mayor Janie Finlay on .93 of a a quota is set for a come back. She was isolated and hounded as mayor by an old boys club on the council.

BREAK O'DAY 3.10pm: John McGiveron has also been elected as a councillor.

BREAK O'DAY 2.25pm: The first three councillors for Break O'Day Council have been announced. They are, in order of votes, Mick Tucker, Hannah Rubenach and Glenn McGuinness.

GEORGE TOWN 2.18pm: After about 50 per cent of the votes counted, there has been a possible election result released for George Town Council. As it stands, the councillors would be Bridget Archer, Heather Barwick, Greg Dawson, Tim Harris, Peter Parkes, Dean Gibbons, Tim Parish, John Glisson and Doug Burt.

MEANDER VALLEY 2.15pm: Ian Mackenzie and Rodney Synfield are the latest councillors to be join the ranks of the Meander Valley Council elected. There are two seats left up for grabs.

LAUNCESTON 2pm: Tom Ellison's preferences have been cut up and distributed. Alderman Danny Gibson is now on 8301 votes, ahead of Alderman Rob Soward on 8036. It all hangs on Jim Cox's preferences.

GEORGE TOWN 1.27pm: It's an interesting situation on the east side of the Tamar, with Heather Barwick and Tim Harris sitting on equal votes after the preferences cut up in the deputy mayor race. In this situation, the Tasmanian Electoral Commission said there will be a "comprehensive recheck" on the votes, and if it's still tied, there is a process called blue balls. In a situation not unlike the lotto, there are two blue balls - one for each candidate - and the successful candidate is whoever's ball is drawn first. The TEC said there would be an update on the situation in about an hour.

GEORGE TOWN 12.50pm: Dean Gibbons has further been excluded from the deputy mayor race. Heather Barwick leads with 1112 votes over Tim Harris on 915 and Peter Parkes on 729.

LAUNCESTON 12.30pm: Alderman Danny Gibson has edged ahead of Alderman Rob Soward in the race for deputy mayor after the cut up of Alan Harris's preferences. Alderman Gibson now leads on 7077, ahead of Alderman Soward on 6907 votes. Before the cut-up, there were six votes separating the two. 

BREAK O'DAY: Mayor and deputy mayor have been decided. Preference cut-up in progress for councillors.

DORSET: Mayor and deputy mayor have been decided. Preferences are now being cut up among councillors. The last update from the Tasmanian Electoral Commission was about 7pm on Tuesday.

GEORGE TOWN: Bridget Archer was elected to mayor unopposed. The preference cut up for deputy mayor is in progress, with two candidates excluded so far. The last update through was this morning.

LAUNCESTON: Albert van Zetten was officially announced as re-elected mayor this morning. The contest for deputy mayor is one of the closest in the election. The final primary votes have been announced and the preferences are being distributed. The last update was about 11am.

MEANDER VALLEY: Craig Perkins claimed mayor early in the count on Tuesday evening. Deputy mayor was announced as Michael Kelly late on Tuesday. Five councillors had been announced as of noon on Wednesday.

NORTHERN MIDLANDS: Done and dusted. Mayor went to David Downie, deputy mayor to Richard Goss and Vanessa Thirkell-Johnston was the only candidate to not be elected in the 10-horse race.

WEST TAMAR: Christina Holmdahl has been elected mayor, with Joy Allen officially claiming the seat of deputy mayor. Distribution of preferences begun on Tuesday evening for councillor votes.

MEANDER VALLEY 12.18pm: A further two councillors have been given the thumbs up for Meander Valley Council, incumbent deputy mayor Deborah White and mayoral candidate Andrew Connor.

MEANDER VALLEY 11.55am: The first three councillors to be elected to Meander Valley Council is incumbent Craig Perkins, and new faces Michael Kelly and Rodney Youd.

LAUNCESTON 11.50am: Albert van Zetten has officially been declared the City of Launceston Mayor. Alderman van Zetten will continue to make history as Launceston's longest continually serving mayor after he won 50.20 per cent of the vote. Alderman Hugh McKenzie received 29.04 per cent and Ted Sands 20.76 per cent.

NORTHERN MIDLANDS 11.40am:  Nine councillors have been elected to Northern Midlands Council. Ten candidates stood for the nine vacant positions, with Vanessa Thirkell-Johnston being the only candidate to miss out. Newly elected mayor David Downie topped the councillor voting, ahead of former Labor MHR Dick Adams, Richard Goss, Janet Lambert, former MHA Michael Polley, Andrew Calvert, Mary Knowles, Ian Goninon and Leisa Gordon. Preferences are still being distributed for the deputy mayor's position, with Mr Goss leading the voting from Ms Lambert, Mr Goninon and Ms Knowles, who will be the first candidate to be excluded.

MEANDER VALLEY 11.40am: Councillors look to be declared soon for Meander Valley Council, with nine out of 13 candidates to have a happy end to their campaign trail. Incumbent and re-elected Mayor Craig Perkins has a commanding lead over the count with more than three quotas at 2454 votes. At the other end of the scale, Tenielle McDermott, Richie Fellows, John Temple and Tanya King look to be in danger of not finding a seat.

LAUNCESTON 11.30am: Preferences will now be distributed in the closely fought race for deputy mayor. The first to be excluded will be Alan Harris. Alderman Danny Gibson is barely ahead of Alderman Rob Soward, with 6502 votes to 6446.

GEORGE TOWN 11.20am: Tim Parish has also been excluded from the deputy mayor race. Heather Barwick still leads the count with 969 votes, ahead of Tim Harris, then councillor Dean Gibbons and Peter Parkes, who are on equal votes.

GEORGE TOWN 11.10am: The preference cut up has began for deputy mayor. Councillor Stephen Geale was the first to be excluded from the race.

AS OF 10.45am

The closest race in the Northern councils appears to be for City of Launceston deputy mayor, with only a handful of votes separating Rob Soward and Danny Gibson. As of midnight, Alderman Gibson stood at 28.08 per cent of the vote, with Alderman Soward on 27.87 per cent. The cut up of preferences will play a crucial hand throughout the day. Albert van Zetten looks to have a solid hold on the mayoral chains with almost 46 per cent of the vote.

Late on Tuesday night, Mick Tucker was officially crowned the new mayor of Break O'Day council with 2023 votes, or 59.47 per cent of the vote. John Charles McGiveron was also elected as deputy mayor for Break O'Day with 59.06 per cent of the vote, ahead of Barry le Fevre.

In Dorset, there was a late-night change of lead in the race for deputy mayor. Shortly before midnight, Greg Howard overtook Dale Jessup in the tally. Mr Jessup had been had been leading throughout the night, however Mr Howard took the win with 51.62 per cent of the vote. Mr Jessup came in second at 48.38 per cent.

As of 10.40pm on Tuesday, about 20 per cent of the councillor votes for George Town had been tallied and provisional results released. Returning to the council look to be Bridget Archer, Heather Barwick, Stephen Geale and Dean Gibbons. They are set to be joined by newcomers Doug Burt, Tim Harris, Greg Dawson, Peter Parkes and Bob Pooley. At this stage, former mayor Roger Broomhall and incumbents Tim Cory, Tim Parish and George O'Sign are not looking to rejoin the council.

Incumbent councillor Joy Allen is set to step up to deputy mayor of West Tamar after officially being elected shortly after midnight. After preferences, Cr Allen took the lead with 55.85 per cent of the vote ahead of fellow councillor Tim Woinarski on 44.15 per cent. The third candidate for the title was Sven Weiner. Christina Holmdahl was Tuesday evening's favourite for the role of mayor, a spot she secured late in the night with 53.77 per cent of the vote.

With approximately 100 per cent of votes counted at 11pm on Tuesday, Richard Goss looks to be in a good position to take deputy mayor for Northern Midlands. Cr Goss is about 500 votes ahead of his nearest challenger, councillor Janet Lambert. There were 10 candidates for councillor positions for the council. At present, it looks to be Vanessa Thirkell-Johnston who will miss out on a seat.

While the position of mayor in Meander Valley was decided early, the race for deputy mayor was close up until its finish just before 11pm. Michael Kelly took the position from incumbent deputy mayor Deborah White. After preferences, Mr Kelly had 51.49 per cent of the vote over Cr White's 48.51 per cent.
