The historic village yesterday took out top honours in the Keep Australia Beautiful competition, stunning judges with a collaborative effort, conducted by resident Di Robinson.

Stricken with the flu, Ms Robinson was yesterday morning unaware of the award — granted to the town at a Sheffield afternoon ceremony — and said she could not be happier with the result.

The town last year won the 501 to 2000 population category and made an extra effort to win this year.

"You don't enter Tidy Towns to win, you enter Tidy Towns to bring the town together.

"We had more than 350 pages of presentations from every business and organisation in Meander Valley — it's about having a common project the town can come together for."

Westbury will now go on to enter the national awards.

Launceston also had a win at the ceremony, coming away with the Tasmania Sustainable Cities Award.

Keep Australia Beautiful judge Barrie Muir said the city had not "rested on its laurels".

"Assessing energy and water conservation and matters associated with all aspects of waste management, the Launceston City Council not only leads by example but helps and encourages its communities to do the same," Mr Muir said.
