Matt Wootton and Chris Letchford will go for gold in BMX flatland competition Flatark in Kobe on Saturday.
Wootton explained the sport involved performing tricks from the ground instead of using ramps or jumps.
In Japan, the eight Australian riders will be expected to complete a two-minute run to qualify for the final.
They will compete in pro and expert classes.
"Usually we have national competitions but a whole group of us decided to go along," Wootton said.
"We could fly over there and ride for two minutes.
"It'll be a hard competition but good experience to see people we've looked up to our whole lives."
Wootton said flatland was a dying art in Australia.
"Kids don't seem to have the patience any more - you spend a lot of time by yourself riding," he said.
"In Japan, there are 12 or 13-year-old kids at our level."
Wootton will run a demonstration at the Ringarooma Show upon his return from Japan.
