The Newstead College student is one of seven college students selected to attend the 2015 Anzac Cove dawn service from throughout the state.

The competition’s two other Northern winners – Launceston College’s Jack Soward and Launceston Church Grammar School’s Rachel Gregory – said they were equally honoured to have been chosen.

The successful students will be taken on a 12-day tour of historic sites in Turkey and attend the  dawn service at Anzac Cove.

Jack said he had previously tried for the state’s Frank MacDonald prize and had kept an eye out for similar opportunities.

‘‘I think we always need to remember (Anzac Day) because of how big it is, to be Australian and to have that connection,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s always been a big thing for my family, we never miss an Anzac service,’’ Kaitelin said.

Rachel said after moving to Australia 10 years ago from Scotland, her family quickly felt a connection with the Anzac legend.

‘‘It’s what it means to be Australian and the qualities we associate with that,’’ she said.

Education Minister Jeremy Rockcliff commended the students.

‘‘This unique trip is the prize of a competition that challenged students to discover more about those who served our country in the Gallipoli campaign,’’ he said.

‘‘Students prepared an essay or audio-visual or online presentation on topics relating to the personal stories of soldiers who served at Gallipoli, with the entries judged by an independent panel.’’
