I commend his stance and suggest others now gather the fortitude to take on this level of government.
I note also a motion at the Liberal Party state conference on the issue of local government reform and the excellent article by Barry Prismall (The Examiner, October 9).
Tasmania wastes more than $6 million annually on payments to mayors, aldermen and CEOs.
If we reduced to seven regional councils, rather than 29 district councils, we would have a better perspective rather than get bogged down with parochial, replicative matters.
We might be surprised at the progress and opportunities then opening up across our state.
Just look how TasWater has crossed former municipal boundaries to overcome water supply issues. This is an indication of the scenario opened up with regional rather than district actions.
Tasmania cannot afford its gross level of overgovernment, and do not expect councils themselves to take any initiatives in this, but rather have Parliament institute an inquiry and report as a prelude to action.
