Having swatted away one pesky fly by rejecting a motion to review - let alone change - the state's Hare-Clark electoral system, the Hodgman Liberal government should now swat the other buzzing nuisance of too many local government districts and way too many mayors and councillors.
There should be widespread embarrassment at "Crunching the numbers" (page 13, October 13), which graphically tells us how overgoverned we are.
That there are 91 candidates for 29 mayoral jobs suggests either a hugely gratifying sense of public spiritedness and altruism or a realisation that the financial return is a bit more than adequate compensation.
The Hodgman Liberal government was given a strong mandate at the recent election to make tough decisions.
Just do it and let the consequences flow as they may - pussyfooting government is a luxury we can no longer afford.
