RETRO campaign material, Parliament seats and grog unearthed from the depths of the Speaker’s room were all up for grabs at the first Parliament House garage sale.
Speaker Elise Archer yesterday hosted the sale on Parliament Lawns in Hobart as part of the Garage Sale Trail, aiming to encourage recycling and foster community spirit.
More than $1500 was raised for cancer charity CanTeen.
Among the items on offer were two iconic green chairs from the House of Assembly prior to its 2008 renovation, snapped up by Hobart Lord Mayor Damon Thomas for $300.
Other items that grabbed attention were an original Rainbow Warrior poster and home-grown succulents from Denison Greens MHA Cassy O’Connor, a football signed by AFL legend Darrel Baldock donated by Deputy Premier Jeremy Rockliff and Jim Bacon campaign fund-raising wine labels from 1994 donated by Labor Denison MHA Scott Bacon.
‘‘As part of my donated items, I’d held onto an election poster from Michael Hodgman’s 2006 campaign, and I had the Premier, his son, sign it,’’ Ms Archer said.
‘‘I think it’s a great idea for the community to get involved and an important message about reusing and recycling,’’ she said.
Garage Sale Trail co-founder Darryl Nichols said the campaign started in 2010 and has spread to 140 council areas Australia-wide.
‘‘Garage Sale Trail in its original incarnation was really an idea that we thought was for households, but in the last few years the biggest growth has actually come from schools, community groups and local charities that have used it as a way to fund-raise,’’ Mr Nichols said.
More than 170 garage sales have been registered in Tasmania with more than 250,000 items listed for reuse, with an estimated value of almost $200,000. To register a garage sale go to www.garagesaletrail.com.au.
