The first of its kind in the state, the school offers intensive full-day classes in seafood cookery for Tasmanians and tourists seeking a cultural culinary experience on their travels.

Business owner Roz MacAllan jumped on the idea of opening her own seafood school, following her move to the East Coast from Queensland.

‘‘For the first time in my life I can cook and eat seafood straight from the sea,’’ she said.

‘‘Since moving to Tasmania my life has changed considerably, I finally learned to fish and obtained a lobster licence.

‘‘Once I met the local fishermen, followed by oyster and mussel farmers I was inspired to open a school dedicated to seafood cookery. Kiss a Fish Seafood Cookery School will focus on cooking all local ingredients in a full scale commercial kitchen, says Ms MacAllan. ‘‘I may not have launched so easily into establishing Kiss A Fish had I not seen this fantastic commercial kitchen in St Helens. I thought, this kitchen is beautiful, I could use it for cooking classes. The premises gave me the inspiration. ‘‘On the menu regularly will be the famous Tasmanian East Coast striped trumpeter, flathead, morwong, leatherjacket and of course whatever else the fishermen bring in. And when available there will be our Southern Ocean rock lobster, abalone and sea urchins.’’
