The map includes various features of Perth and was placed on one of the most viewed boards in the town — the face of its main street’s train park public toilet.
Although the location may not sound flattering, Perth Local District Committee chairman Michael Geeves said it was an ideal position for the promotional sign.
‘‘The train park is probably one of the most stopped at places in Perth by the travelling public,’’ Mr Geeves said.
‘‘The map is a format of Perth, featuring the walk along the river and the amenities of Perth as well as some of the historic buildings, it’s designed.
‘‘Perth at the moment, what you see, is just the drive through the centre of it, people don’t realise the vastness of it.’’
He said the idea was first mentioned about three years ago, but official planning for the council-funded initiative began last year.
‘‘Part of what the group is doing is one of the things heading towards the period of the bypass,’’ Mr Geeves said.
‘‘It’s to make sure that people understand what is in and about the town — it’s a bit like Hadspen, the river in Hadspen is a wonderful spot, but many people don’t know about it.’’
He said the initiative also fitted in with the council’s beautification of the town.
‘‘It’s about bringing people into the town,’’ Mr Geeves said.
‘‘The committee is always looking for local people who want to participate and be active in providing ideas or opportunities, we can have up to nine members.’’
