National newspapers yesterday reported that Australia’s military personnel had been offered a pay increase of 1.5 per cent annually over three years compared to the previous average of 3 per cent each year.
‘‘The current ADF workplace remuneration offer is a disgusting, cowardly act - at a time in our nation’s history when again actions count more than words,’’ Senator Lambie said.
Assistant Minister for Defence Stuart Robert said the offer would see salary increases for more than 70,000 ADF Permanent Force and Reserve members.
‘‘The new workplace remuneration arrangement, if agreed by the independent Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal, will deliver a salary increase for our troops,’’ he said.
‘‘In an environment of fiscal restraint I have taken a considered, methodical approach to this process which balances the Government’s remuneration policy with recognition of the unique nature of military service.’’
Senator Lambie was not convinced.
‘‘These are decisions prompted by men who have never served their country, worn the uniform or been prepared to take a round for Australia.
‘‘Defence Minister Johnston should resign in disgrace - or the PM should sack him if he won’t resign.’’
Senator Lambie said she would raise the offer at the next sitting of parliament and the Senate Estimates hearing into defence spending.
‘‘It’s an example of incompetent, cowardly leadership in and of our defence force,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s another reason why we need a Royal Commission into the leadership and waste in our military.’’
An agreed Commonwealth position on remuneration will be taken to the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal on Wednesday.
