Eagles chairman Shane Pritchard said the club was committed to starting up the women’s team and believed it would prove to be a positive for the club and for cricket in the region.
‘‘We are pushing to get female cricket up and running and it is something the club hasn’t done before and is a new direction for our club,’’ he said.
‘‘The club has a great tradition or producing state level cricketers and we are looking forward to the opportunities of developing a female state cricketer from Mowbray Cricket Club in the future – but for now our focus is on entering a team and developing the girls for the first few seasons.’’
Cricket Tasmania’s game development officer for women’s cricket, Samantha Cotton, said the sport was a great way to get active this summer.
‘‘Cricket is a great team sport to get fit and healthy and meet new friends whilst having heaps of fun in a social environment.
‘‘We are really looking forward to seeing this new competition up and running this season and the interest so far has been really good.’’
The T20 games will be played on Sundays, from 4.30pm, starting on October 26.
There will be a 12-round roster including Cricket North finals, and a play-off for the position in the statewide women’s T20 competition. Any females interested in playing for Mowbray should contact Pritchard on 0418 131 084.
