Jason Robert Burns, 21, faced the Launceston Magistrates Court from the dock for a facts hearing yesterday.

In December 2013, Burns was jailed for 18 months, backdated to March 2012, with 13 months suspended for two years after a Launceston Supreme Court jury found him guilty of aggravated armed robbery, committed with a shotgun.

In the Magistrates Court, Burns had previously pleaded guilty to charges including having failed to stop after a crash, having evaded police, two counts of unlicensed driving, six breaches of a family violence order and two counts of petrol theft, all committed between February and March this year.

Yesterday, police prosecutor Michael Bonde told the court that on March 13 about 11.25am, a Holden Commodore sedan ignored a give-way sign and T-boned a marked police car at Kings Meadows.

Mr Bonde said the Commodore was approaching the intersection of Riseley and Jillian streets so fast that police did not see what had hit them.

The police car spun and was pushed about 10 metres south down Jillian Street.

The officers inside suffered minor injuries and their car was a writeoff.

Burns fled from his car and police arrested him in Guy Street, Kings Meadows, several hours later.

Mr Bonde further told the court about Burns’s six breaches of a family violence order, which included Burns using a silver baseball-style bat to hit a taxi in the early hours of March 12 after he discovered his ex-partner, her child and a friend were inside.

Burns then tailgated the occupied taxi at speeds of up to 100km/h while flashing his car’s headlights along Hobart Road at Kings Meadows, then police tried to intercept his Commodore at Six Ways, but he sped off.

Defence solicitor Adrian Hall said his instructions had been brief and his client, who had been in custody since March 14, accepted his fate.

Magistrate Simon Brown adjourned sentencing to Friday at 2.15pm.
