IT IS impossible to measure the overall benefits for Tasmania of Hawthorn’s successful grand final appearance yesterday, says Tasmanian Premier Will Hodgman.

Mr Hodgman said the day was important for the state as the Hawks defied their underdog status to win their 12th premiership with a 63-point win over Sydney in front of a crowd of 99,454 at the MCG.
Not only was Tasmania in full view of everyone to see on the jumper of the Hawthorn players, but coach Alastair Clarkson and captain Luke Hodge both acknowledged Tasmania in their victory speeches.
A measurement of the exposure that the state received is displayed by the estimated TV audience of more than 4.5 million in Australia, with the game also shown in 49 territories across the globe.
This, Mr Hodgman said, was ‘‘massive’’ for the state.
‘‘There’s a strong Tasmanian presence here (at the MCG) and that is the result of a strong mutual partnership between the Hawthorn Football Club and the state of Tasmania and today we get to share it all,’’ Mr Hodgman said.
‘‘It is difficult to quantify, even though there have have been studies that say the relationship is worth millions to our economy, but the social and cultural benefits are boundless.’’
These feelings were echoed by Events Tasmania director Adam Sproule and Tourism Tasmania chairman James Cretan yesterday.
‘‘There’s no doubt Tasmania is part of the national focus today with the Hawks in the grand final,’’ Mr Sproule said.
‘‘Getting into the finals series gives us a lot of extra exposure through mainland media outlets and keeps Tasmania at the top of people’s minds, which is really valuable.’’
Mr Cretan said: ‘‘There’s no question that Hawthorn gives its sponsor, Tasmania, a return on its investment. If the values of Hawthorn can be connected with Tasmania, that passion and commitment they have, that’s a good thing.’’
Under Hawthorn’s five-year sponsorship agreement with the state government, the Hawks will receive a $150,000 bonus by winning yesterday, on top of receiving that amount for qualifying.
The current $15 million five-year state government sponsorship deal with Hawthorn to play four games in Launceston ends at the end of 2016.
The club will now bring the premiership cup to Tasmania on Wednesday to celebrate, with further details on that to be announced today.
