Acting Assistant Commissioner Peter Edwards told a legalised medicinal cannabis inquiry that marijuana was ‘‘clearly recognisable’’ and at higher risk of finding its way onto the black market.
‘‘Growing of high-THC cannabis would require a sound level of security in relation to the growing site, transport and processing facilities,’’ he said.
Rumney MLC and former officer Tony Mulder questioned the disparity between cannabis and poppies, but Mr Edwards argued stolen cannabis would be far easier to use or sell.
Asked if current medical cannabis users could be targeted by police, Mr Edwards said the force’s main focus was those who profited from, not possessed, illegal substances.
He said Tasmania Police predominantly targeted suppliers, manufactures and distributors of drugs.
