Starting yesterday, the three-month trial aims to show how extensive fare evasion is and how this affects Metro Tasmania.
There has been no investigation previously into the issue in the state.
The trial will also be used as an opportunity for officers to inform passengers of fare types and regulations.
Metro acting chief executive Alan Pedley said paying the correct fare is the responsibility of the passenger.
‘‘Some passengers may not even be aware they are breaking the law,’’ Mr Pedley said.
‘‘If they are taking a longer trip, they need to ask the driver to override the Greencard default.
‘‘If a passenger fails to have the correct ticket or is found to be over-riding on their Greencard, they could receive a caution or even a fine,’’ he said.
Metro offices will be checking tickets, Greencard information and concession discounts.
Although the extent of the issue is yet to be confirmed by the trials, Metro bus driver Wayne Balland said he sees passengers paying incorrect fare prices on his bus routes.
